Former Ghanaian professional boxer Braimah Kamoko, popularly known as Bukom Banku, has appealed to the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, to forgive fellow boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, known as Ayitey Powers, following his arrest over an alleged threat of death.

Bukom Banku’s appeal comes after the Accra Regional Police Command arrested the 46-year-old former professional boxer in connection with an alleged threat made against the NSA Director-General.

According to the Police, the arrest followed the circulation of a video on social media in which Ayitey Powers is alleged to have issued a death threat against Mr Ampofo Ankrah.

The Accra Regional Police Command announced the arrest in a statement issued by its Public Affairs Unit on Monday, August 24, 2026.

The Police, however, did not immediately disclose the circumstances that allegedly led to the threat or provide details about what may have triggered the comments attributed to the former boxer.

Ayitey Powers is currently in Police custody and is assisting investigators as the Command works to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

The Police said investigations were ongoing and that appropriate action would be taken based on the outcome of the process and in accordance with the law.

The Command has also not indicated whether Ayitey Powers has been formally charged with any offence.

Amid the development, Bukom Banku has called on the NSA Director-General to show leniency towards his fellow boxer and forgive him over the alleged comments.

The appeal reflects the longstanding relationship between the two former boxers, who have both been prominent figures in Ghana’s boxing community.

Bukom Banku’s intervention is expected to draw attention to the need for reconciliation, particularly as the Police continue their investigations into the matter.

While appealing for forgiveness, the development remains subject to the ongoing Police investigation, and the allegations against Ayitey Powers have not been established in court.

The Accra Regional Police Command has cautioned members of the public against drawing premature conclusions or circulating unverified information about the case.

In the statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the Police assured the public that the matter was being handled through the appropriate legal processes.

The Command urged the public to allow investigators to complete their work and establish the facts surrounding the alleged threat before conclusions are drawn.

The Police said further action would be taken depending on the outcome of the investigations.

The arrest came after the alleged comments gained significant attention on social media, prompting the Police to intervene and commence investigations.

Ayitey Powers is a well-known former Ghanaian professional boxer who competed in the light heavyweight division and became a prominent personality within Ghana’s boxing fraternity.

His career and public profile have made the latest development a subject of considerable public interest, particularly because it involves a former high-profile sports personality and a senior official of the National Sports Authority.

For now, the Police investigation remains ongoing, while Bukom Banku has appealed directly to the NSA Director-General to forgive his fellow boxer and allow the matter to be resolved peacefully.
