The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, has reportedly granted financial clearance for the construction of the Samenya–New Town road in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region and the rehabilitation of the Ankobra Bridge.
The financial clearance marks a key step towards the implementation of the two infrastructure projects, which are expected to improve road connectivity, ease transportation challenges and support economic activities in the municipality and surrounding communities.
With the clearance process completed, attention is expected to shift to the subsequent procurement, contractual and administrative procedures required to facilitate the commencement of the projects.
The 25-kilometre Samenya–New Town road, which runs from the Samenya Barrier through Half Assini to New Town near the Ghana–Côte d’Ivoire border, serves as an important route for residents, motorists, traders and commercial transport operators.
However, the deteriorating condition of the road has become a major concern for residents, chiefs, drivers and other stakeholders, including the Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Dorcas Affo-Toofey.
The proposed construction is expected to ease transportation difficulties, improve access to essential services and facilitate the movement of people and goods across communities in the municipality.
Similarly, the rehabilitation of the Ankobra Bridge is expected to address concerns about its deteriorating condition and improve the safety and efficiency of transportation for commuters and commercial vehicle operators who depend on the route.
The two projects are particularly important to communities whose livelihoods depend on farming, fishing, trading and other economic activities that require reliable road infrastructure.
The financial clearance comes amid calls from residents for urgent investment in Jomoro’s road network. In July 2026, residents appealed for improvements to roads in the municipality, citing the impact of poor road conditions on transportation, access to healthcare and local economic activities.
The Ankobra Bridge has also been the subject of public concern over its condition. In August 2026, residents called for urgent rehabilitation, warning of potential risks to road users.
The latest development is therefore expected to raise hopes among residents and other stakeholders who have long advocated improvements to the area’s transport infrastructure.
However, the specific amount approved for the projects, the official commencement dates for construction and the timeline for the bridge rehabilitation had not been independently confirmed at the time of publication.
The timely implementation of the projects could improve connectivity within the Jomoro Municipality, facilitate commercial activities and address longstanding transportation challenges faced by residents.
