The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has demolished an unauthorised pigsty at Agbogbloshie after its operators failed to comply with a final directive to remove the structure, which was obstructing an ongoing waste evacuation exercise.

The removal forms part of efforts to facilitate the movement of heavy-duty machinery and personnel deployed for the National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise, aimed at clearing accumulated refuse and improving environmental sanitation in the area.

According to the Assembly, the enforcement action followed a final warning issued to the operators on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

The notice was served during an inspection of the ongoing waste clearance operation led by the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, accompanied by the Metropolitan Coordinating Director, Douglas N.K. Annoful, and other Assembly officials.

The operators were given the opportunity to remove the structure voluntarily but failed to do so, prompting the AMA to proceed with its demolition.

Speaking after the exercise, Mr Allotey said the decision is necessary because the structure was interfering with the movement of equipment and personnel involved in the waste evacuation operation.

He further disclosed that the pigsty had been established and operated without the required permit or authorisation from the Assembly, contrary to the local regulations governing animal rearing within the metropolis.

The Mayor cited the AMA’s Control of Animals By-law, 2017, which prohibits the keeping of swine, cattle, sheep, goats and other specified animals within the Assembly’s jurisdiction without the appropriate permit.

The Assembly’s action underscores its efforts to enforce sanitation and regulatory requirements while removing obstructions that could hinder ongoing environmental clean-up operations.

The National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise is intended to clear accumulated waste at Agbogbloshie and support efforts to restore environmental cleanliness in the area.
