The government has handed over 128 vehicles to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) as part of efforts to strengthen local governance, improve administrative efficiency and enhance the implementation of development projects across the country.

The vehicles, comprising sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and pickup trucks, were presented by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at the Institute of Local Government Studies in Madina, Accra.

The intervention is expected to improve the mobility of MMDCEs and strengthen the operational capacity of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to carry out their administrative responsibilities.

With improved access to transportation, the assemblies are expected to enhance the monitoring and supervision of development projects, facilitate field visits and improve coordination in the delivery of public services within their respective jurisdictions.

Addressing the beneficiaries at the handover ceremony, Mr Ayariga emphasised the need for the vehicles to be used responsibly and maintained properly.

He stressed that the vehicles were government assets intended strictly for official duties, underscoring the importance of accountability in the management of public resources.

The minister’s caution highlights the need for the beneficiaries to ensure that the vehicles serve their intended purpose and contribute to the effective discharge of their responsibilities at the local level.

Proper maintenance, he indicated, is also essential to preserving the vehicles and ensuring that they remain operational for the benefit of the assemblies.

The provision of the 128 vehicles forms part of the government’s broader commitment to strengthening decentralisation and improving the delivery of public services through local government institutions.

MMDAs play a key role in implementing government policies, coordinating development initiatives and addressing the needs of communities within their jurisdictions.

Their responsibilities include monitoring local infrastructure projects, supervising development activities, coordinating sanitation and environmental management initiatives, and facilitating the implementation of programmes designed to improve living conditions.

Effective performance of these responsibilities often requires regular engagement with communities and visits to project sites, making transportation an important operational resource for local government officials.

The new vehicles are therefore intended to support the work of MMDCEs as they oversee the activities of their respective assemblies and monitor development interventions.

Beyond improving mobility, the distribution of the vehicles places emphasis on the responsible management of government resources.

The minister’s directive on their use and maintenance reinforces the expectation that public assets should be managed in a manner that supports institutional efficiency and delivers value to the public.

The effectiveness of the intervention will depend, in part, on how the vehicles are deployed to support official assignments, monitor projects and facilitate the delivery of services to residents.

The government has identified the strengthening of decentralisation, promotion of accountability and improvement of local-level service delivery as key objectives of the intervention.

The handover of the 128 vehicles marks another step in the government’s efforts to equip local government authorities with resources to carry out their responsibilities.

However, the extent to which the intervention improves local governance will ultimately be reflected in the assemblies’ ability to monitor development projects effectively, respond to community needs and deliver public services efficiently.
