A joint team of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service has arrested 11 persons and recovered a cache of weapons and other security-related items during an intelligence-led cordon and search operation at Kromase, near Nkwanta in the Oti Region.
The operation, conducted in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26, 2026, was led by the Combat Team Commander, Major Muktar Saani, and formed part of Exercise STARLIGHT STRETCH III, an ongoing military exercise aimed at strengthening the preparedness of the Ghana Army to respond effectively to emerging security threats.
The operation involved personnel from the Ghana Army and the Ghana Police Service, who conducted searches at selected premises following intelligence received by the security agencies.
The search operation continued until about 8:30 a.m., during which the security team recovered several items considered relevant to the ongoing investigations.
Among the items retrieved were a pump-action gun, live ammunition, body armour, a locally manufactured ammunition belt and a police uniform.
The 11 suspects, together with the recovered items, were subsequently escorted to the operational base, where they are currently being held in custody.
According to the security agencies, the suspects are assisting the Police and Military with investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the possession of the weapons and other security-related items.
The operation forms part of broader efforts to strengthen security preparedness and address potential threats within the Nkwanta area and its surrounding communities.
The involvement of both military and police personnel also underscores the importance of inter-agency collaboration in intelligence gathering, targeted operations and the maintenance of public safety.
Security authorities have stressed the importance of intelligence-led operations in identifying and responding to emerging threats before they escalate.
Exercise STARLIGHT STRETCH III is intended to enhance the operational readiness of the Ghana Army and improve its ability to work with other security agencies in responding to evolving security challenges.
The latest operation at Kromase therefore highlights the role of coordinated security operations in maintaining peace and stability, particularly in areas where security concerns require a joint response from multiple agencies.
Investigations into the identities of the suspects, the origin and intended use of the recovered items, and any possible links to other security concerns in the area are ongoing.
