Recent data from the Ghana AIDS Commission has ranked the Wenchi Municipality third in the Bono Region for HIV prevalence.
During the annual health performance review held in Wenchi, Mr. George Agyemang, the Acting Director of the Wenchi Municipal Health Directorate, disclosed that 2,153 individuals are currently living with HIV/AIDS in the municipality.
This brings the local prevalence rate to 2.5%.
Addressing the rising figures, Mr. Agyemang issued a strong call to action for residents to prioritize their sexual health.
He urged married couples to remain faithful to their partners to curb the internal spread of the virus.
For unmarried individuals, the Health Director emphasized the importance of consistent and correct condom use to prevent new infections.
The HIV data was not the only concern raised during the review.
Mr. Agyemang further revealed that the municipality has recorded an 11% prevalence rate for Tuberculosis (TB) cases, highlighting a dual challenge for local respiratory and immunological health.
The annual review was held under the theme: “Stakeholder Engagement and Efforts in Achieving Universal Health Coverage.”
The event brought together local leaders and health professionals to strategise on improving healthcare access and meeting national health targets.
