President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned the world’s largest calcined clay cement plant at the Tema Free Zones Enclave, hailing the facility as a “landmark step” in Ghana’s industrial revival and commitment to sustainable manufacturing.
The $110 million facility, developed by CBI Ghana Ltd, boasts an annual production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes.
It utilizes cutting-edge limestone calcined clay technology, which drastically reduces carbon emissions without compromising the structural integrity required for modern infrastructure.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Mahama emphasized that the plant is more than just a factory it is a cornerstone of his administration’s strategy to reposition Ghana as Africa’s premier industrial hub.
”This commissioning represents a tangible step toward our goal of economic sovereignty.
We are not just building factories; we are building a future where ‘Made in Ghana’ is a global standard for quality and sustainability,” the President stated.
The President used the platform to announce an ambitious roadmap for the manufacturing sector.
A target to increase manufacturing’s contribution to GDP to at least 15% by 2030.
A strategic shift to reduce reliance on imported clinker, saving foreign exchange.
Strengthening Ghana’s competitive edge to export low-carbon construction materials under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Designed to operate continuously under the government’s 24-Hour Economy policy, the plant is expected to create thousands of jobs across the value chain from clay mining to logistics and distribution.
President Mahama commended the Ghana Free Zones Authority and the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry for their roles in securing the investment.
He also congratulated the management of CBI Ghana for their foresight in adopting green technology, noting that the project places Ghana at the forefront of the global transition to eco-friendly construction.
