A wave of fear has gripped the Agona East District following a daring daylight robbery on the Swedru-Asafo road that has left a local official fighting for his life.
The attack occurred at approximately 5:00 PM on Thursday in Agona Asafo.
According to reports, a gang of armed robbers targeted several local shops, terrorizing vendors and bystanders.
The criminals reportedly made away with an undisclosed amount of cash representing the day’s sales from multiple businesses.
During the chaos, Ishmael Odoom, the current Assembly Member for the Agona Asafo Electoral Area, sustained severe injuries.
He is currently reported to be in critical condition at a nearby medical facility.
Bright Adobah, an eyewitness who spoke to 1960news.com, described a scene of panic as the robbers struck during a busy period of the evening.
Former Assembly Member for the area, Abeiku Ansah, expressed his distress over the rising insecurity in the area.
He issued a formal plea to the regional security agencies, urging them to increase patrols on the Swedru-Asafo stretch.
He wants the Ghana Police Service to deploy intelligence-led operations to track the perpetrators as well as provide a lasting solution to the frequent robbery attacks plaguing residents.
Reacting to the development, the Agona East District Chief Executive (DCE), Samuel Oscar Mensah, visited the community to assess the situation.
While acknowledging the role of technology, the DCE suggested that business owners must take more proactive physical measures.
”I urge residents and business owners to consider employing trained security personnel to provide a physical presence at their workplaces, rather than relying solely on CCTV cameras,” Mensah stated.
The police have yet to announce any arrests, but investigations into the brazen attack are currently ongoing.
