The Administrator and Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), Sofo Rashid Tanko-Computer has underscored the organization’s unwavering commitment to expanding rural connectivity across Ghana.
Speaking during a high-level meeting with global technology leader Huawei at the 2026 edition of the Mobile World Congress on March 5, the CEO of GIFEC emphasized that improving the Rural Telephony Project remains a central pillar of GIFEC’s strategy to ensure underserved and unserved communities have access to reliable telecommunications services.
The GIFEC delegation, led by Mr. Sofo Rashid Tanko-Computer and accompanied by Director of Corporate Affairs Ms. Francisca Adjei, engaged with Huawei’s leadership, including Li Junfeng, Vice President of Huawei and CEO of the company’s Global Public Sector Business Unit, and Mlungisi Nhlapo, Huawei’s Advisory Product Manager.
The meeting explored innovative solutions to strengthen rural telephony services, aligning with GIFEC’s mission to bridge the digital divide and support Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.
During the discussions, Huawei presented cutting-edge advancements in rural telephony, including the latest version of their Rural Telephony Project (RTP) masts.
These modern masts are designed to improve network quality and expand coverage in remote areas, providing enhanced voice and data services to communities that currently lack sufficient telecommunications infrastructure.
The Ghanaian delegation was given an in-depth overview of the technological capabilities of this advanced infrastructure. Huawei demonstrated how these updated systems could significantly enhance the reliability and accessibility of digital communication services in rural Ghana.
The CEO of GIFEC praised the presentation for demonstrating innovative ways to improve connectivity for underserved communities.
“Our focus is to ensure that all citizens, regardless of location, have access to reliable telecommunications services. These advanced solutions provide an opportunity to improve not just connectivity but also the quality of life in rural areas.”
In his address, Sofo Rashid Tanko-Computer reiterated GIFEC’s commitment to expanding rural connectivity and enabling socio-economic development through improved telecommunications services.
“Enhancing our Rural Telephony Project is a key priority for us. This project is critical in rolling out 3G and 4G services to rural communities, enabling access to vital digital opportunities, information, and socio-economic growth,” he explained.
He added that the collaboration with Huawei and other global technology providers is instrumental in achieving GIFEC’s mandate of bridging the digital divide.
“Strategic partnerships like this ensure we are leveraging the best technologies to bring digital transformation closer to the people who need it most,” he noted.
