The Ghana Police Service has arrested two suspects, including the alleged gang leader, in connection with a robbery attack that led to the death of a player from Berekum Chelsea Football Club.
According to a police update, the arrests were made following an intelligence-led operation targeting individuals believed to be behind the incident.
One of the suspects sustained gunshot injuries during an exchange of fire with police intelligence teams and has since been transported to hospital for treatment under police guard.
Authorities say the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to track down all persons involved in the attack, which has sent shockwaves through the football community and beyond.
While the identities of the suspects have not yet been disclosed, police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and further updates will be provided in due course.
The incident occurred at Ayeresu on the Gorso Road, a stretch between Bibiani and a nearby community popularly known as “B-Town,” on April 13.
The attackers reportedly mounted a roadblock, forcing the team’s vehicle to a halt. Sensing danger, the driver attempted to reverse to avoid a confrontation, but the robbers advanced toward the vehicle, escalating the situation.
Gunshots were reportedly fired during the attack, triggering panic among the players and officials on board.
Several members of the team fled into nearby bushes to seek cover as the assailants closed in.
Tragically, one player, identified as Dominic Frimpong, was fatally shot and died during the incident.
The development has heightened concerns about security, particularly for sports teams on the road, with growing calls for swift justice for the slain footballer.
In response, the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has directed district police commands to assign two officers to escort football clubs during their travels.
