The Mayor of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), Ebi Bright, has officially launched the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) in Tema, with training tools and equipment distributed to master craftspersons and trainees under the initiative.
Speaking at the launch, the mayor described the programme as a deeply personal milestone, stating that it formed the foundation of her “campaign of hope.” She noted that seeing the initiative come to life in Tema demonstrated that promises backed by commitment and resources could create real opportunities for young people.
“The National Apprenticeship Programme responds to a real challenge — youth unemployment.
These are not just statistics. In Tema, I see them in the faces of young men and women who come seeking direction, opportunity, and hope. This programme offers that direction,” she said.
The mayor urged apprentices to treat the tools they received as start-up capital and an investment in their future.
She also commended the master craftspersons for dedicating their time and expertise to training the beneficiaries.
She further encouraged trainees to maintain the equipment and use it to build sustainable livelihoods.
“Whether they choose employment or self-employment, the goal remains the same: sustainable income, dignity, and contribution to community development,” she added.
The mayor also expressed gratitude to John Dramani Mahama for prioritising skills development and supporting the programme with a GHS 300 million allocation in the 2025 national budget.
“Promises without budgets are just words; this programme has both,” she stated.
She additionally acknowledged the support of the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment, the National Youth Authority, Tema Metro Coordinating Director Mr. Francis Mensah, Regional Coordinator of NAP Mr. Jones Klutse, Mr. Decardi-Nelson Kenneth Amponsah, and other stakeholders who contributed to the successful rollout of the programme.
