The Ghana Police Service has thwarted a planned robbery operation and recovered a cache of weapons and other items believed to be linked to a notorious robbery syndicate operating across parts of the country.
The successful operation was carried out jointly by the Surveillance Unit of the National Operations Department and the Ashanti North Regional Police Command following intelligence-led investigations into the activities of the criminal network.
According to police sources, the operation targeted Ali Mohammed, a 23-year-old robbery suspect who had been on the police wanted list for his alleged involvement in a series of violent robberies and murders.
Police said the suspect was being sought in connection with the shooting and killing of Dominic Frimpong on the Akyiresu–Kwame Dwomo Sreso road in the Ahafo Region on April 12, 2026.
Investigators had also linked him to two separate robbery attacks that occurred at Bosomkyekye along the Mampong–Ejura highway in July 2025 and February 2026.
One of those attacks reportedly resulted in the death of a driver’s mate.
Acting on credible intelligence, a team of officers tracked the suspect to Kukuom in the Ahafo Region on June 2, 2026, where an operation was launched to apprehend him.
However, police said the suspect allegedly opened fire on the officers with an AK-47 rifle in an attempt to resist arrest.
The officers responded and managed to overpower him during the ensuing confrontation.
Ali Mohammed sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange and was rushed to the Goaso Government Hospital for treatment.
Despite efforts by medical personnel, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the facility.
A subsequent search conducted by the police led to the recovery of several items believed to have been used in criminal operations.
The exhibits retrieved included one AK-47 rifle, one pump-action gun, two AK-47 magazines, nine rounds of ammunition, three mobile phones, a motorbike ignition key, a black nose mask, four talismans, and a sack.
Police believe the recovered weapons and materials may provide crucial evidence in ongoing investigations into a series of armed robbery incidents in the Ahafo, Ashanti, and surrounding regions.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that efforts are underway to dismantle the entire criminal network.
Investigators are currently pursuing other suspected members of the syndicate, including individuals identified as Omar Chad, Dauda Tahidu, and Suley, who remain at large.
Police have urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing information that could assist in the arrest of the remaining suspects.
They reiterated their commitment to combating violent crime and ensuring the safety and security of citizens across the country.
The latest operation forms part of intensified efforts by the Ghana Police Service to crack down on armed robbery activities and organized criminal groups operating on major highways and communities nationwide.
