Former President of Ghana, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says Bangladesh is determined to chart a democratic future as the country heads to the polls today.
As Chairperson of the Commonwealth Observer Group in Bangladesh, he has expressed hope that the elections will be transparent and peaceful.
“Today’s elections present an opportunity for the people of Bangladesh to have a new beginning in their democratic process,”
Nana Akufo-Addo said in a video posted on his Facebook page. “An outsider like me can only wish and hope that it will be an exercise conducted peacefully across the country.”
Bangladesh is voting today for a crucial national election to elect a leader.
Commonwealth Observer Group in Bangladesh
The election, which involves over 127 million eligible voters and 1,981 candidates contesting 299 parliamentary seats, is seen as a key test of Bangladesh’s return to democracy after the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.
Nana Akufo-Addo believes the poll will send a strong signal to the world that Bangladesh is ready for democratic rule.
“It will be a tremendous signal to the world, to South Asia, South East Asia, that Bangladesh is determined to charter a democratic future,” he said.
The election is a direct contest between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and a Jamaat-e-Islami-led coalition of 11 parties.
