Tension and confusion erupted at Abura Aboadze in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese Constituency when a branch election of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was violently disrupted, leaving the Branch Chairman reportedly assaulted by suspected land guards.
The incident, which occurred during what was expected to be a routine internal party exercise, quickly descended into chaos after disagreements over whether the election should proceed or remain suspended.
According to accounts gathered from party members and local sources, the branch election had earlier been suspended following misunderstandings among some members of the constituency.
The Constituency Elections Committee is said to have issued a directive postponing the exercise indefinitely, allowing tensions to cool and outstanding issues to be resolved.
However, on the day of the incident, a team allegedly led by the Constituency Secretary, Emmanuel Idan, reportedly arrived at the venue with the intention of continuing with the election despite the suspension notice.
This move triggered disagreements among party executives and supporters present at the scene, escalating an already tense atmosphere.
Speaking from his hospital bed at the Abura Dunkwa District Government Hospital, the Branch Chairman, Mr. Oscar, gave a harrowing account of what transpired.
He claimed he intervened to stop the election from going ahead, insisting that there was an official suspension directive from the Constituency Elections Committee that had not been rescinded.
According to him, his attempt to enforce the directive angered some individuals at the scene, who he described as suspected land guards.
“They attacked me when I tried to stop the process,” he alleged, adding that he was dragged and beaten severely until he lost consciousness.
Mr. Oscar was later rushed to the Abura Dunkwa District Government Hospital by concerned party members and residents who intervened after the assault.
Medical officials are currently attending to his injuries, though the full extent of his condition has not been publicly disclosed.
Eyewitnesses say the scene turned chaotic as supporters fled in different directions while others attempted to rescue the injured chairman.
The matter has since been reported to the Abura Dunkwa Police Command, which has confirmed that investigations have begun into the alleged assault.
As of the time of filing this report, no arrests have been made.
Police say efforts are underway to identify all individuals involved in the incident and ensure they are brought to justice.
The violent disruption has sparked concern among members and supporters of the National Democratic Congress in the constituency, with many calling for stricter enforcement of internal electoral rules.
Some members are urging the national and regional leadership of the party to intervene and ensure that future internal elections are conducted in a peaceful and well-coordinated manner to prevent similar incidents.
The incident adds to growing concerns about internal disputes and rising tensions in some local party structures ahead of future political activities.
