The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has called on Members of Parliament (MPs) to take leading roles in the upcoming National General Cleaning Days scheduled for July 10 and 11, 2026, in regions affected by the recent floods.
Delivering a statement on the floor of Parliament, Speaker Bagbin said the House fully supports the nationwide sanitation initiative announced by John Dramani Mahama in response to the devastating floods that have impacted several parts of the country.
He urged MPs, particularly those representing constituencies in the affected regions, to spearhead clean-up exercises in their communities by working closely with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), traditional authorities, youth groups, civil society organisations and residents.
According to the Speaker, Members of Parliament have a responsibility to lead by example by mobilising their constituents to actively participate in the exercise, which is aimed at improving environmental sanitation and reducing the risk of future flooding.
Speaker Bagbin also revealed that Parliament’s leadership would consider making the necessary arrangements to enable MPs from the affected regions to return to their constituencies to coordinate and participate in the clean-up campaign.
He stressed that Parliament remains fully committed to supporting national efforts to improve environmental sanitation, safeguard lives and property, and build resilient communities capable of withstanding future disasters.
The National General Cleaning Days form part of the government’s broader post-flood recovery and mitigation measures, with authorities encouraging citizens, institutions and community organisations to join the nationwide exercise to clear choked drains, remove waste and restore affected communities.
The initiative follows widespread flooding that caused significant destruction in several regions, prompting renewed calls for sustained sanitation efforts and stronger disaster preparedness across the country.
