The Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, Ndan Ya-Na Abukari
Mahama ll, describing his death as a significant loss to the Dagbon Kingdom and Ghana.
In a condolence message issued on Monday, July 13, 2026, Dr. Bawumia extended his heartfelt sympathies to the chiefs and people of Dagbon, saying the revered traditional ruler’s passing had left the nation in mourning.
Quoting the Islamic expression, “To Allah we belong completely and to Him shall we return ultimately,” Dr. Bawumia said he received news of the King’s death with deep grief and prayed for strength and comfort for the bereaved family and the entire Dagbon Kingdom.
According to the NPP flagbearer, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II ascended the Dagbon throne during one of the most difficult periods in the kingdom’s history and played a crucial role in restoring peace, unity and stability after years of conflict.
He praised the late King for his wisdom, patience and exemplary leadership, noting that although his reign was relatively short, its impact would be remembered for generations.
Dr. Bawumia stated that the late Yaa Naa successfully reunited families that had been divided, healed longstanding tensions within Dagbon, and provided leadership that balanced respect for tradition with a commitment to development and progress.
He further acknowledged the King’s relentless advocacy for development projects across Dagbon, describing him as a traditional leader who consistently championed the welfare of his people.
Reflecting on their personal relationship, Dr. Bawumia said he greatly benefited from the counsel and guidance of the late Yaa Naa during his tenure as Vice President of Ghana and later as the New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate.
“It was always an honor to pay him homage at the ancient Gbewaa Palace and to draw from his immeasurable wisdom and guidance,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia maintained that the death of the Dagbon overlord represents a tremendous loss not only to him personally but also to the Dagbon Kingdom and the nation at large.
He prayed that Allah grants the late King eternal rest and gives his immediate family, the chiefs and people of Dagbon, and all Ghanaians the strength to bear the painful loss.
