The Ghana Police Service has arrested six suspects in connection with a highway robbery on the Portor-Gurumpe Highway in the Bono East Region and recovered the entire GH¢300,000 stolen during the attack.
According to a press release issued by the Bono East Regional Police Command on July 26, 2026 (Reference No. BERHQ.13/V.V/14), the robbery occurred on Saturday, July 19, 2026, at about 8:30 p.m., near the Portor Police Barrier under the Kintampo Police Division.
The Police said personnel on duty at the Portor Police Barrier received intelligence that an armed robbery was underway a short distance from the checkpoint. Officers immediately responded to the distress call and proceeded to the scene.
Upon arrival, four of the suspects fled into a nearby bush. However, police arrested Abdul Sadat Ali, 24, the driver of a Toyota Voxy with registration number AS 1541-25.
During preliminary interrogation, Abdul Sadat Ali identified Samad Issahaka, 24, driver of a Kia Rhino truck with registration number AS 7337-23, as an accomplice in the robbery. Police subsequently arrested him.
Investigations revealed that the owner of the Kia Rhino, Yahaya Seidu, 35, had instructed his driver, Samad Issahaka, to transport him to Buipe to purchase cattle.
Police said the driver allegedly exploited his knowledge that his employer was carrying a large sum of money by conspiring with five other individuals to stage a robbery.
The suspects, armed with what police described as a toy pistol, allegedly followed the Kia Rhino from Offinso in the Ashanti Region and intercepted it shortly after it passed the Portor Police Barrier, making away with GH¢300,000 in cash.
Following the robbery, personnel from the Police Counter Terrorism Unit, working alongside the local Police Patrol Team, pursued the fleeing suspects into the bush and successfully arrested four additional suspects.
They have been identified as: Abdul Rahman Mashud, 21, Asigri Avoka, 25, Awini Stephen, 19 and Faisal Salifu, 26.
A search conducted on the suspects led to the recovery of the full GH¢300,000 stolen from the victim.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly admitted that they had trailed the Kia Rhino from Offinso before executing the robbery at Portor after allegedly receiving information from Samad Issahaka regarding the cash being transported.
All six suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting investigators with ongoing inquiries.
The Bono East Regional Police Command commended the vigilance and professionalism of officers stationed at the Portor Police Barrier, as well as the Counter Terrorism personnel who participated in the operation.
