The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 12-year-old boy and a 34-year-old man in connection with a viral video showing the minor behind the wheel of a heavy-duty articulated truck, raising serious concerns about road safety and child supervision.
According to the Police, the arrests followed investigations into the widely circulated footage, which captured the boy driving a DAF XF 105 articulated truck bearing registration number GS 3097-20.
The 34-year-old suspect is believed to be the driver responsible for allowing the child to operate the vehicle. Both the man and the minor are currently in the custody of the Central Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) in Accra, where they are assisting police with ongoing investigations.
The incident has generated widespread public concern, with many social media users questioning how a child was permitted to drive such a large commercial vehicle on a public road.
In a statement, the Ghana Police Service stressed that allowing minors or unlicensed individuals to operate motor vehicles, particularly heavy-duty trucks, is a serious offence that poses significant risks to road users.
The Service reminded parents, guardians, and vehicle owners of their responsibility to ensure that children and unlicensed persons are not allowed to drive under any circumstances.
Police further noted that such actions not only endanger lives but also constitute violations of Ghana’s Road Traffic Act.
The Police also called on members of the public to support efforts aimed at improving road safety by promptly reporting incidents involving underage or unlicensed drivers.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and ensuring that those who flout the law are held accountable to protect lives and property on Ghana’s roads.
