The Savannah Regional Police Command, with support from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and the Police Intelligence Directorate, has arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with the robbery of two Mobile Money vendors at the Buipe Cattle Market, during which GH¢430,000 was reportedly stolen.
The robbery occurred on June 29, 2026, when a gang of four armed men attacked the vendors at the cattle market in the Savannah Region.
According to the police, the suspects were armed with two pump-action guns, one single-barrel gun and an AK-47 assault rifle. They reportedly fired sporadically during the attack before fleeing the scene with the stolen money.
Following the incident, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno deployed personnel from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit to assist the Savannah Regional Police Command with investigations aimed at identifying and apprehending the perpetrators.
After weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering, the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, working with the Police Intelligence Directorate and the Kintampo Divisional Police Command, arrested one of the suspected robbers, identified as Yacouba Oumar, on July 23, 2026.
Oumar, 28, was arrested at Soronuase in the Bono East Region.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted his involvement in the robbery and named three other persons he claimed were part of the operation.
They were identified as Yakubu Seidu, alias Baba; Abdulai Aziz Yahaya, alias Addo; and Abduli Buipe, also known as Addo.
The suspect further told investigators that the gang was allegedly contracted to carry out the robbery by a cattle trader at the Buipe market identified as Alhaji Yacouba, who is also known by the names Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu.
Information obtained from the arrested suspect reportedly led investigators to several locations where other members of the alleged syndicate were believed to be hiding.
The police team subsequently extended its operations to Atebubu, Soronuase, Agogo and Dawadawa in the Bono East and Ashanti regions.
During the operation, police encountered some of the suspects, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.
The police said the confrontation led to the deaths of three suspected members of the gang—Yakubu Seidu, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya and Oumaro Amadu.
Their bodies have been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The police also recovered firearms and ammunition believed to have been used by the gang.
Items retrieved included one pump-action gun and five live BB cartridges, as well as a single-barrel gun.
The recovery of the weapons, according to the police, forms part of the ongoing investigation into the robbery and the activities of the suspected syndicate.
Suspect Yacouba Oumar remains in police custody and is assisting investigators with further enquiries.
The police have meanwhile intensified efforts to arrest Alhaji Yacouba, the alleged person who contracted the gang, as well as other individuals believed to be connected to the robbery.
The Savannah Regional Police Command has assured the public that investigations will continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the robbery, identify all persons involved and bring those found culpable before the law.
The case remains under investigation.
