The Deputy National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mimi Duah, has thrown her support behind former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, in the race for the party’s National Women’s Organiser position.

Mimi Duah believes Hawa Koomson possesses the experience, leadership qualities and strong grassroots connections required to lead the NPP’s women’s wing and help reposition the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.

According to her, the former MP and minister has demonstrated over the years that she understands the concerns of women at the grassroots level and has the capacity to mobilise, inspire and unite them.

She described Hawa Koomson as a “grassroots mother”, stressing that her approach to leadership is anchored in forgiveness, unity, guidance and reconciliation.

Mimi Duah said the ability to resolve internal disagreements and bring aggrieved members back into the fold would be particularly important for the NPP as it seeks to rebuild its structures while in opposition.

In explaining her endorsement, Mimi Duah pointed to Hawa Koomson’s extensive political experience, which she said makes her well-equipped to take charge of the party’s women’s organisation.

She noted that Koomson has served at various levels of the party and government, including as a constituency women’s organiser, Member of Parliament and Minister of State.

For Mimi Duah, the combination of grassroots organising experience and national-level political exposure gives Hawa Koomson an advantage in understanding the challenges confronting women organisers across the country.

She argued that the next National Women’s Organiser must be someone who understands the party from the polling station and constituency levels while also possessing the confidence and networks necessary to operate at the national level.

Mimi Duah also praised Hawa Koomson’s resourcefulness, particularly her ability to build relationships and mobilise support for women within the party.

She said Koomson had demonstrated an ability to lobby for logistics, establish useful networks and create opportunities for training and financial assistance for women organisers.

According to her, such support would be critical to strengthening the capacity of women organisers at the regional, constituency and polling station levels.

She believes a well-resourced and motivated women’s wing will play a significant role in the NPP’s efforts to reconnect with its grassroots base and prepare for the 2028 elections.

Mimi Duah further argued that the NPP’s current position in opposition requires a National Women’s Organiser who is bold, fearless and assertive enough to mobilise the party’s women and provide strong leadership during the reorganisation process.

She said the position should not merely be occupied by someone with a title but by a person capable of motivating party members, addressing internal challenges and building a formidable grassroots organisation.

“We need a women’s organiser who has been tested, who is bold, who understands grassroots women, and who can lead us to victory in 2028,” she said.

Mimi Duah subsequently identified Hawa Koomson as the candidate she believes can provide that leadership and deliver the desired results for the party.

The endorsement comes as the NPP prepares to reorganise its structures and position itself for the 2028 general elections.

With women constituting a significant part of the party’s grassroots membership and campaign machinery, the choice of a National Women’s Organiser is expected to be important to the party’s mobilisation strategy.

Mimi Duah’s backing therefore adds to the growing political conversations surrounding who should lead the NPP’s women’s wing into the next election cycle.

For her, Hawa Koomson’s record in party organisation, political experience, grassroots engagement and ability to foster unity makes her the leader capable of rebuilding confidence among women organisers and strengthening the party’s electoral machinery.

The race for the position is expected to generate further interest within the NPP as the party’s internal reorganisation gathers momentum ahead of 2028.
