Member of Parliament for Atiwa East and Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Abena Osei-Asare, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of seven people following the collapse of a galamsey pit at Asamang Tamfoe in the Eastern Region.

In a statement, the MP described the incident as a “profound tragedy,” extending her condolences to the bereaved families, friends and residents of the Asamang Tamfoe community.

She said the loss of seven lives under such circumstances had brought immense pain and sorrow to the affected families and the wider community.

“I have received with profound sadness the news of the tragic collapse of a galamsey pit at Asamang Tamfoe, which has resulted in the loss of seven precious lives,” she said.

Abena Osei-Asare urged the bereaved families to draw strength from their loved ones and offered prayers for comfort and courage as they come to terms with the tragedy.

She also acknowledged the efforts of emergency responders, community members and relevant authorities involved in the response to the incident and the ongoing activities following the collapse.

According to the MP, the incident should serve as a reminder of the urgent need to strengthen safety measures and promote responsible mining practices in mining communities.

She stressed that the protection of human life must remain a priority, particularly in areas where illegal and unregulated mining activities continue to pose serious risks to residents and miners.

“Beyond our grief, this tragedy calls for renewed attention to safety and responsible mining practices.

The protection of human life must remain paramount, and every effort must be made to prevent such avoidable tragedies from occurring in our communities,” she stated.

The MP concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of the seven victims and for strength and fortitude for their families and loved ones.

“May the souls of the seven departed rest in perfect peace, and may God grant their families and loved ones fortitude in this time of sorrow,” she added.
