Ghanaian former world boxing champion Isaac Dogboe has officially announced his retirement from professional boxing, bringing an end to a career that saw him rise to the pinnacle of the sport and make history for Ghana.

Dogboe, who became Ghana’s youngest world boxing champion at the age of 23 in 2018, retires after years of competing at the highest level and representing Ghana on the international boxing stage.

The announcement marks the conclusion of a journey that began with Dogboe establishing himself as one of Ghana’s most promising young boxers before making a breakthrough on the world stage.

In 2018, Dogboe produced one of the defining moments of his career when he defeated Mexican boxer Jessie Magdaleno to win the WBO super-bantamweight world title. At 23, he became Ghana’s youngest-ever world boxing champion.

His victory was particularly significant because it added another chapter to Ghana’s proud boxing history, which includes legendary world champions such as Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey and David Kotei.

Dogboe successfully defended the WBO super-bantamweight title before losing it to Mexican fighter Emmanuel Navarrete later that year.

Despite the setback, he remained an active and respected figure in professional boxing and continued to compete at the international level.

His career also included a move up in weight, with Dogboe later campaigning in the featherweight division. He faced several high-profile opponents during his career, gaining valuable experience against some of the sport’s leading fighters.

Beyond his achievements inside the ring, Dogboe’s career has been marked by resilience, having overcome defeats and challenges to continue competing at elite level.

His decision to retire now closes a significant chapter in Ghanaian boxing, particularly given the historic achievement of becoming the country’s youngest world champion.

Dogboe leaves the sport with his name firmly established among Ghana’s notable boxing champions and with the distinction of having achieved world championship glory at a remarkably young age.
