The Ghana Police Service says it has brought under control violent disturbances that erupted in New Winneba in the Central Region on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, leaving at least three people dead and about 15 others injured.
The violence reportedly broke out around 10:40 a.m. when a group of about 300 irate persons, allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks, stormed the New Winneba Township.
According to the Police, the group was made up of individuals from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze.
The attackers allegedly targeted natives in the township, including their shops and residences, resulting in attacks on individuals and the destruction of properties.
The Police said about 15 injured persons have been conveyed to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical attention.
One of the injured victims is a police officer who was caught up in the violence while responding to the situation.
The Police also confirmed that three people have died in connection with the disturbances.
In response to the violence, personnel from the Winneba Divisional Police Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols have been deployed to the affected areas to restore and maintain law and order.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohonu, has also directed the deployment of additional personnel to reinforce the security presence in the area.
The reinforcement team includes two armoured vehicles from the Police National Headquarters, which have been dispatched to support the personnel already on the ground.
The Police said the additional deployment is intended to strengthen security and prevent further escalation of the violence.
The Police Service has assured residents that the situation is currently under control following the deployment of security personnel.
It has, however, not provided details on what triggered the confrontation or whether any arrests have been made.
The Police said further details would be communicated to the public as investigations and security operations continue.
Residents in New Winneba and surrounding communities are expected to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel as efforts continue to maintain peace and protect lives and property.
