The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has imposed a temporary ban on the erection of billboards within the Kumasi metropolis until further notice.

The directive forms part of measures by the Assembly to strengthen regulation of outdoor advertising and ensure that billboard operators comply with existing municipal regulations.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the KMA said the ban applies particularly to outdoor advertising operators, owners, managers and persons who rent out billboard spaces within its jurisdiction.

As part of the enforcement exercise, the Assembly has directed all billboard operators within the metropolis to report to the KMA and produce valid permits as well as proof of payment of the appropriate fees for the 2026 financial year.

According to the Assembly, affected operators have 14 days, effective Tuesday, September 1, 2026, to submit the required documentation for verification and compliance.

The exercise is intended to enable the KMA to establish which billboard structures have the necessary approvals and whether operators have fulfilled their financial obligations to the Assembly.

The KMA has warned that billboard structures whose operators fail to provide valid proof of the required permits and payment of the appropriate fees within the stipulated period will be removed.

The Assembly said such action would be undertaken in accordance with the applicable regulations governing outdoor advertising within the metropolis.

It therefore urged all affected operators to take advantage of the 14-day compliance period and submit the necessary documents to avoid enforcement action.

The KMA has directed operators to submit their documents and undertake verification at the Physical Planning Department of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, located at the Adum Ministries area, near the Ghana Immigration Service Regional Command.

The Assembly explained that the exercise is part of its broader efforts to ensure a safe, orderly and properly regulated urban environment within Kumasi.

The directive comes as billboard structures and outdoor advertisements remain a prominent feature of Kumasi’s rapidly developing urban landscape, making proper regulation important for issues including planning compliance, public safety and orderly use of public spaces.

The KMA Management appealed to all stakeholders to cooperate with the exercise to facilitate smooth implementation of the directive.
