NPP defers constitutional amendments to next national delegates conference

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has deferred consideration of proposed amendments to its constitution to a subsequent National Delegates Conference, citing time constraints at the party’s ongoing conference in Kumasi.

The decision was announced by the Acting National Chairman, Danquah Smith Butey, popularly known as Chairman Butey, during his opening remarks on Saturday, October 3, 2026.

He said the proposed amendments would not be taken through the deliberation and voting process at the current conference and would instead be tabled at the next National Delegates Conference.

The move is intended to allow delegates sufficient time to study the proposed changes before they are presented for consideration and approval.

Among the amendments originally scheduled for consideration were changes to the election and composition of the party’s national executive structures.

One proposal sought to require candidates contesting for Vice Chairperson to declare the specific position they were seeking, instead of allowing the three highest vote-getters to automatically become the First, Second and Third Vice Chairpersons.

Another proposal sought to create three additional non-elected Vice Chairperson positions, while also introducing additional Vice Chairperson positions at the regional and constituency levels.

The proposed changes also included the creation of Deputy Communications Officer positions at the national, regional and constituency levels.

In addition, the party was expected to consider proposals to introduce Information Technology (IT) Officer positions into its regional and constituency executive structures.

Another significant proposal was the return of the President to the NPP’s National Steering Committee.

However, with the amendments deferred, delegates at the October 3 conference will focus on other business before the party, including the election of its national officers.

The NPP’s National Delegates Conference has brought together delegates from across the country to deliberate on the party’s affairs and elect its national leadership.

The constitutional amendments are therefore expected to be revisited at a subsequent national conference, where delegates will have the opportunity to examine the proposals before voting on them.

Chairman Butey did not announce a specific date for the next conference or indicate whether any modifications would be made to the proposed amendments before they are resubmitted.

The postponement effectively removes the constitutional review from the agenda of the ongoing conference, with the party expected to provide further details on the next steps and timeline in due course.
