The Ghana Education Service (GES) through the Central Regional Education Directorate has ordered the immediate and indefinite suspension of all inter-school sporting activities across the region.
The directive follows a series of violent incidents and “grave clashes” between students during recent zonal athletics competitions.
In a press release issued by the Regional Director of Education, Mrs. Juliette Dufie Otami, PhD, the management expressed deep concern over the breakdown of discipline, noting that the violence has posed a serious threat to the safety of students, staff, and spectators alike.
According to the statement, school sports are designed to foster teamwork, mutual respect, and healthy rivalry.
However, recent events have seen these values overshadowed by acts of indiscipline.
”It is regrettable that these noble objectives have been undermined by acts of indiscipline and violence,” the statement read.
“In the interest of safeguarding lives, maintaining order, and preserving the integrity of school sports, Management hereby directs the immediate cessation of all zonal inter-school sporting activities.”
The directive applies to all Senior High Schools (SHS),
Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS).
The suspension takes immediate effect and remains in place “until further notice.”
GES has clarified that this is a temporary measure intended to allow for a cooling-off period and a thorough review of the current security situation.
Management plans to deliberate with key stakeholders to develop “preventive mechanisms” to ensure such violence does not recur.
Heads of all affected institutions have been instructed to suspend all planned or scheduled zonal athletics competitions immediately.
The Regional Director emphasized her commitment to restoring sports in the region, provided that future conditions can “guarantee safety, discipline, and the true spirit of healthy competition.”
