Two people have died and 14 others, including a police officer, sustained gunshot wounds following disturbances at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region.

The incident occurred on Saturday, October 3, 2026, during activities marking the community’s Yam Festival celebration.

According to the Bono Regional Police Command, the Wenchi Divisional Police has since restored calm to the area and intensified security patrols following the disturbances.

The Police said the disturbances occurred at the Four Junction in Nchiraa at about 5:30 p.m., shortly after the Yam Festival programme had ended.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Nana Tabiri Yaw III and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to the chief’s palace when a gunshot was heard, triggering the disturbances.

The circumstances surrounding the gunshot and the events that followed remain under investigation.

The Police said two persons died in the incident, while 14 others sustained gunshot wounds. The injured persons include a police officer and are currently receiving medical treatment.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The Bono Regional Police Command said it has intensified patrols in Nchiraa to prevent further disturbances and maintain public safety.

The Command said the situation in the community is currently calm, while investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.

In a statement issued on Monday, October 5, 2026, and signed by the Bono Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, the Police assured residents and the general public that efforts were underway to arrest individuals found to have been involved in the disturbances.

The Police have not yet disclosed the identities of the deceased, the injured persons or any suspects.

The Command has also not provided further details on what may have triggered the gunfire or whether any arrests have been made.

Investigations are therefore continuing as the Police work to establish the full sequence of events that led to the deaths and injuries during the festival celebration.
