In a major push for sustainable transport and youth employment, the Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has launched a fleet of 50 electric vehicles (EVs).

The initiative, a partnership with the Afro-Arab Group, was unveiled on Monday February, 23 at the group’s head office in Accra.

It marks the first phase of a broader “work-and-pay” model designed to empower the youth while supporting the government’s ambitious 24-hour economy agenda.

According to Minister Opare Addo, who also serves as the National Youth Organizer for the NDC, the project serves a triple purpose which are job creation, logistics improvement, and environmental sustainability.

”This initiative is about more than just cars; it’s about creating jobs, boosting the 24-hour economy through reliable transportation, and leading the shift toward greener, more affordable transport,” Opare Addo stated.

The initiative seeks to provides a low-barrier entry for youth to own and operate vehicles, ensuring sustainable livelihoods.

In this vein, the Ministry plans to train local mechanics to become electrical engineers, ensuring the local capacity exists to maintain the new EV fleet.

The launch follows the recently passed 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill, a legislative milestone paving the way for a full national rollout by the end of 2026.

The President of the Afro-Arab Group, Ambassador Alhaji Salamu Amadu, emphasized that this is only the beginning.

He revealed that this batch of 50 is part of a larger commitment to deploy 1,000 electric vehicles for Ghanaian youth.

By increasing productivity around the clock, the government aims to transform Ghana into an import-substitution and export-led economy.
