The Member of Parliament for Atiwa East and Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in Parliament, Abena Osei-Asare, has been re-elected Deputy Chairperson of the African Organisation of Public Accounts Committees (AFROPAC), securing another term in the continental parliamentary body.

Her re-election took place at the conclusion of AFROPAC’s General Conference and Meeting, currently being held in Accra, where representatives of Public Accounts Committees from across Africa gathered to deliberate on issues relating to parliamentary oversight, public financial management and institutional accountability.

The decision by delegates to retain the Atiwa East legislator is regarded as an endorsement of her contribution to strengthening parliamentary scrutiny of public expenditure and promoting transparency in the management of public resources.

Her continued role in the organisation also reinforces Ghana’s representation in continental efforts to improve the effectiveness of parliamentary institutions in holding governments and public officials accountable for the use of state funds.

As Deputy Chairperson, Osei-Asare is expected to contribute to AFROPAC’s broader objective of strengthening the capacity of Public Accounts Committees across Africa to perform their constitutional and oversight responsibilities effectively.

Public Accounts Committees play an important role in examining reports of public expenditure, scrutinising the findings of national audit institutions and demanding explanations from public officials over financial irregularities and weaknesses in the management of public funds.

Through these responsibilities, the committees serve as an important accountability mechanism within democratic governance, helping to ensure that public resources are utilised in accordance with approved budgets, financial regulations and the broader interests of citizens.

AFROPAC provides a platform for parliamentary Public Accounts Committees across the continent to share experiences, exchange best practices and develop strategies for improving legislative oversight of public finances.

The organisation’s work is particularly significant at a time when African countries continue to face demands for stronger public financial management systems, improved revenue mobilisation and greater accountability in the use of limited public resources.

Osei-Asare’s re-election therefore offers Ghana an opportunity to maintain an active leadership presence in discussions and initiatives aimed at strengthening financial accountability and parliamentary oversight across the continent.

Her position as both Ghana’s Public Accounts Committee Chairperson and AFROPAC Deputy Chairperson places her at the intersection of national and continental efforts to promote responsible public financial management.

Her retention is also expected to sustain Ghana’s participation in AFROPAC’s initiatives, particularly those focused on building the institutional capacity of legislatures to examine government expenditure and address concerns arising from audit reports.

The outcome of the conference marks a continuation of Ghana’s involvement in the organisation’s leadership and its broader commitment to advancing transparency, accountability and effective parliamentary oversight in Africa.
