The Minister of Education has directed the immediate suspension of the Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Mr Zakaria Abdulai, pending investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct involving a female student of the school.
The directive follows an investigative report by JoyNews and journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, which brought the alleged misconduct to the attention of the Ministry of Education.
In a statement issued by the Ministry, the Minister described the matter as serious and instructed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take immediate and effective steps to suspend the headmaster while investigations are conducted.
The Minister has also requested the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service to commence investigations into the allegations.
The two directives are intended to facilitate investigations into the reported incident and establish the facts surrounding the allegations.
The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service have reiterated their commitment to protecting students and ensuring that educational institutions remain safe environments for teaching and learning.
According to the Ministry, alleged misconduct of this nature will not be tolerated or condoned in any educational institution across the country.
It stressed that teachers and school authorities have a fundamental responsibility to protect students entrusted to their care and safeguard their welfare.
The Ministry further emphasised that parents and guardians place their trust in educators to provide a safe environment for their children, rather than subject them to abuse.
The statement underscored the importance of upholding professional conduct and ensuring that school authorities fulfil their responsibilities towards students.
The involvement of the Police CID is expected to provide an opportunity for the allegations to be independently investigated and the circumstances surrounding the reported incident established.
The headmaster’s suspension, as directed by the Minister, is pending the outcome of the investigations and should not be interpreted as a determination of guilt.
The Ministry has not disclosed further details about the alleged incident in its statement.
The case has renewed attention on the responsibility of educational authorities to protect students from sexual misconduct and ensure that allegations of abuse within schools are promptly investigated.
The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service have reaffirmed their position that the safety and welfare of students must remain a priority across the country’s educational institutions.
