The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has promoted Inspector Hance Atubra of the Tarkwa Divisional Police Headquarters to the rank of Chief Inspector in recognition of his bravery and swift intervention during a fire outbreak at Aboso in the Western Region.

The promotion follows Inspector Atubra’s actions during the incident on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, when several shops at the Aboso Main Lorry Station were engulfed by fire, destroying property and putting the lives of people in the area at risk.

According to information on the incident, Inspector Atubra was the first police officer to arrive at the scene after the fire was reported.

Upon reaching the area, he immediately assessed the situation and took steps to assist people who were trapped within the affected premises.

He reportedly entered the affected area and helped evacuate victims to safer locations, while also working to prevent further loss of life and property.

His prompt response and personal courage reportedly drew commendation from residents, traders and other eyewitnesses who were present during the emergency.

The actions of Inspector Atubra were subsequently brought to the attention of the Police Administration, with a recommendation that he be recognised for his exceptional conduct during the emergency.

The IGP approved the promotion, elevating him from Inspector to Chief Inspector.

The decision is being seen as recognition of the officer’s courage, quick thinking and commitment to protecting lives and property, particularly in a situation that presented significant danger.

Fire outbreaks at busy commercial and transport centres can pose serious risks because of the concentration of people, shops, vehicles and potentially combustible materials.

In such circumstances, the ability of emergency responders and security personnel to act swiftly can be critical in preventing fatalities and reducing the extent of damage.

The promotion also highlights the Police Administration’s stated commitment to recognising officers who demonstrate exceptional courage, professionalism and dedication in the line of duty.

Inspector Atubra’s intervention serves as an example of the role police officers can play beyond conventional law enforcement duties, particularly during emergencies and disasters where members of the public require immediate assistance.

The recognition is expected to encourage other officers to remain responsive and committed to their constitutional responsibility of protecting life and property.

Meanwhile, the full extent of property damage caused by the Aboso fire and the circumstances surrounding the outbreak are yet to be detailed in the information available on the incident.
