The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Dr William Amankrah Appiah, and the Obuasi East Municipal Director of Education, Mr Kwamena Owusu-Nketiah, to step aside with immediate effect amid ongoing investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Mr Zakaria Abdulai.
The directive, announced in a press release issued by the GES on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, is intended to ensure that investigations into the matter proceed without potential interference or the perception of interference.
According to the GES, the two directors are required to hand over their offices and all state property in their possession to the Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Mr Thomas Kwame Boateng.
The decision represents a further administrative measure by the education authorities as investigations into the allegations against the Obuasi SHTS headmaster continue.
The GES has also reiterated that Mr Abdulai remains interdicted, dismissing reports circulating that he has been cleared in connection with the allegations.
Management has urged the public to disregard such reports, stressing that the investigative process is still ongoing.
The clarification comes amid growing public attention surrounding the matter, which has triggered administrative actions involving officials of the education service in the Ashanti Region.
The Service has not, in the statement, provided further details about the specific allegations against the headmaster or disclosed the expected timeline for completing the investigations.
As part of the directive, Dr Amankrah Appiah and Mr Owusu-Nketiah are expected to relinquish their official responsibilities and hand over all state property in their possession to Mr Boateng.
The GES said the measure is aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the investigation and ensuring that the process proceeds without circumstances that could undermine public confidence in its outcome.
However, the statement did not indicate whether the two directors are themselves subjects of the investigation or whether their decision to step aside is a precautionary administrative measure.
The Management of the Ghana Education Service has called on the public to remain calm and support the ongoing investigative process.
It also appealed for cooperation from all relevant stakeholders to enable a thorough investigation into the matter.
The Service’s position makes clear that the interdiction of the headmaster remains in force and that no official clearance has been announced.
The outcome of the investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the allegations and inform any further administrative action by the education authorities.
