The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested a 66-year-old woman and her 29-year-old son over the alleged unlawful possession of suspected narcotic and restricted drugs at Dormaa Ahenkro in the Bono Region.

The suspects, identified as Mary Awuni, 66, and Maxwell Akukah, 29, were arrested by the Bono Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit during an intelligence-led operation at Kumi Daa Street (KDS), a suburb of the Dormaa Central Municipality.

According to the Police, a search conducted in the rooms occupied by the two suspects led to the seizure of a substantial quantity of substances suspected to be narcotic and restricted drugs.

The items retrieved included 147 yellow compressed slabs wrapped in sellotape, suspected to be Indian hemp, as well as 270 boxes and 329 blisters of assorted Tramadol.

The Police also recovered 14 blisters of Rohypnol, GH¢87,751 and CFA 2,000 during the operation.

The Police said Mary Awuni was found in possession of a metal trunk containing the 14 blisters of Rohypnol, GH¢72,612 and CFA 2,000.

During questioning, she allegedly told investigators that the drugs and money had been given to her by a man in Accra for onward delivery to another person in Côte d’Ivoire.

The Police, however, said the suspect admitted ownership of the items found in her room.

Her son, Maxwell Akukah, was arrested in a separate room where the suspected Indian hemp, Tramadol and GH¢15,139 were found.

According to the Police, Akukah denied ownership of the items and claimed they belonged to his brother, identified as Anthony, who was reportedly outside Dormaa Ahenkro at the time of the operation.

The Police did not indicate whether Anthony had been arrested or located as investigations continue.

The two suspects are currently in Police custody and assisting with investigations.

The Bono Regional Police Command said investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the possession and intended distribution of the suspected drugs and to facilitate the prosecution of persons found culpable.

The Command reiterated its commitment to tackling narcotics-related offences in the region and urged residents to provide credible information to the Police to help protect communities and enhance public safety.
