The Upper East Regional Police Command has re-arrested a 20-year-old suspect, Muntari Munumi, in connection with an alleged armed robbery at Sapeliga Junction near Kobore in the Upper East Region.

The suspect was arrested with an M16 A2 assault rifle, three live rounds of ammunition and five expended cartridge shells, according to a police statement issued on October 22, 2026.

Preliminary investigations indicate that two victims, whose identities have been withheld, were travelling home from Bazua after work when they were allegedly attacked by the suspect at Sapeliga Junction.

The suspect reportedly robbed the victims of a Royal motorbike, three mobile phones and cash amounting to GH¢1,820.

According to the police, the victims engaged the suspect in a fierce struggle during the robbery and managed to seize his weapon after he had fired several shots but missed his intended target.

The victims subsequently alerted the Googo Neighbourhood Watch Committee, which mobilised its members to apprehend the suspect.

The committee arrested Muntari and handed him over to the police, together with the assault rifle and the ammunition recovered from him.

The police described the arrest as part of efforts to address armed robbery and other criminal activities in the region.

The police statement further indicated that, following his arrest, Muntari disclosed the identities of his alleged accomplices and the source of the weapon he reportedly used for his operations.

He subsequently offered to lead a police team to locations where the individuals could be arrested.

However, the operation was interrupted when the suspect reportedly complained of dizziness while being transported by the police and suddenly fell unconscious.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

His body has since been deposited at a morgue for preservation and autopsy to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.

The police have not provided further details about the cause of his death.

The Upper East Regional Police Command says efforts are underway to arrest the suspect’s alleged accomplices and bring them before the law.

The disclosure of their identities and the alleged source of the weapon is expected to support ongoing investigations into the robbery and the circumstances surrounding the possession and use of the M16 A2 assault rifle.

The police have not disclosed the identities of the alleged accomplices or provided further information about the source of the firearm.

The Command has commended the two victims for their role in resisting the attack and recovering the weapon, as well as the Googo Neighbourhood Watch Committee for its swift response.

It also acknowledged the support of the Chief of Sapeliga in efforts to maintain security in the area.

The incident highlights the role of community cooperation in supporting law enforcement and responding to suspected criminal activities.

The police have urged the public to continue supporting security agencies with relevant information to help prevent crime and facilitate the arrest of suspects.

Investigations into the alleged robbery and efforts to apprehend the suspect’s alleged accomplices are ongoing.
