Seven Ghanaian fishermen who were reported missing on October 18, 2026, have been rescued in Benin’s territorial waters, the Western Regional Marine Police Command has announced.
The fishermen were rescued by local fishermen on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at about 10:00 p.m., according to a press release issued by the Western Regional Police Command on Thursday, October 22.
The rescue brings relief to the families and communities of the seven men, whose whereabouts had been unknown since they were reported missing.
The fishermen have been identified as Kofi Emmanuel, 32; Uncle Amoah, 45; Kwamena Nkum, 29; Kofi Aboagye, 36; Doboa, 35; Agya Badu, 42; and Kwamena Akyem, 40.
In the statement, the Western Regional Marine Police Command confirmed that all seven men have been found and rescued, although it did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding their disappearance or how they ended up in Benin’s territorial waters.
Following the rescue, the Marine Police Command is coordinating with the Ghana Navy and their counterparts in Benin and Togo to facilitate the fishermen’s safe return to Ghana.
The police said coordination efforts are ongoing as the relevant authorities worked towards their repatriation.
The involvement of the security agencies from the three countries highlights the cross-border coordination required to facilitate the fishermen’s return from Benin to Ghana.
However, the police have not yet disclosed when the seven fishermen are expected to arrive in Ghana.
The Western Regional Police Command has assured the public that further information will be communicated as developments unfold.
The police statement did not specify the circumstances that led to the fishermen being reported missing on October 18 or indicate whether any investigation was underway into the incident.
For now, efforts are focused on ensuring the fishermen’s safe repatriation to Ghana, with further updates expected from the authorities.
