The Upper East Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the Military, has recovered an AK-47 assault rifle and 28 rounds of ammunition during an intelligence-led security operation in the Binduri District.
The operation was launched in response to recent shooting incidents and other firearm-related offences reported in parts of the district.
According to the Upper East Regional Police Command, one of the suspects encountered during the operation, identified as 32-year-old Isaka Sabani, alias “Culture,” sustained gunshot wounds.
The suspect was subsequently retrieved with an AK-47 assault rifle loaded with 28 rounds of ammunition. He later died from the injuries he sustained during the operation.
Preliminary investigations by the Police indicate that Sabani was wanted in connection with a case involving attempted murder and unlawful discharge of firearms reported at the Bawku Police Station on August 28, 2026.
The Police further said he was suspected of being involved in a series of shooting incidents recorded at Agenda 111, Aniisi and Gumyoko, all in the Binduri District.
The incidents reportedly occurred on August 29, 30 and 31, 2026, respectively, heightening security concerns in the area.
The recovery of the AK-47 and ammunition forms part of efforts by the security agencies to trace individuals believed to be involved in recent firearm-related incidents and prevent further attacks.
The Upper East Regional Police Command said it would continue to work closely with the Military and other sister security agencies to identify and apprehend persons suspected of involvement in criminal activities in the region.
The Command also assured residents and other stakeholders of its commitment to restoring and maintaining security, law and order.
It urged the public to cooperate with the security agencies by providing relevant information that could assist in identifying and bringing other suspected perpetrators to justice.
The operation comes amid heightened security concerns in parts of the Upper East Region, particularly following a series of shooting incidents and other firearm-related offences.
The Police said joint security operations would continue as efforts intensify to ensure the safety and security of residents.
