Tension has gripped the Bunkpurugu traditional area in the North East Region following reports of gunfire in the town early Monday morning.

The incident has prompted the deployment of a joint security task force comprising personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces to restore calm and protect residents.

The security presence is aimed at preventing further escalation and ensuring that residents can go about their daily activities without fear.

Although the situation is reported to be under control, authorities have yet to officially establish the circumstances that led to the gunfire.

The cause of the shooting remains unclear, with security officials expected to conduct investigations to determine what triggered the incident and whether anyone was involved in the exchange of gunfire.

The development has heightened concerns over a long-running chieftaincy dispute within the Bunkpurugu traditional area.

The dispute reportedly involves two rival clans, both of which have competing claims over the rightful successor to the paramount stool of the traditional area.

The unresolved succession dispute has been a source of tension in the area, raising fears that disagreements over the traditional leadership could spill over into violence.

Monday morning’s gunfire has therefore renewed calls for restraint among the factions and for traditional and state authorities to intensify efforts to find a lasting solution to the dispute.

Following the deployment, security personnel are maintaining a heightened presence in Bunkpurugu as authorities work to prevent any further disturbances.

Residents have been urged to remain calm and avoid actions or activities that could inflame the situation while efforts are made to mediate between the rival sides.

Authorities are also expected to continue monitoring developments closely, particularly in areas considered vulnerable to clashes.

The latest incident underscores the need for a peaceful resolution to the chieftaincy dispute, as any escalation could threaten lives, property and the relative peace in communities within the traditional area.

Further details are expected to emerge as security agencies continue their assessment and investigations into the morning’s gunfire.
