The Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly has assured the public that the Villagio building near Airport Junction in Accra is structurally sound, dismissing reports on social media suggesting that the high-rise development is at risk of collapse.

The assurance follows growing public concern over the building’s safety after reports emerged that waste materials had fallen from the structure during the recent rains.

Speaking at a press briefing, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ayawaso West, Dr Michael Mensah, said the Assembly has visited the facility with engineers to assess its condition.

According to him, the assessment indicated that the building remains structurally sound, with no indication that it is on the verge of collapse.

Dr Mensah explained that the incident involving falling waste materials has triggered concern and panic among members of the public. However, he cautioned against interpreting the incident as evidence of structural failure.

He urged residents, business operators and other members of the public who live, work or conduct business around the area to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified claims about the building’s condition.

An engineer with the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly, Engineer Cezer, also reaffirmed the building’s structural integrity, stating that its condition had been monitored from the foundation stage to its current state.

He emphasised the need for the public to rely on professional engineering assessments rather than speculation and unsubstantiated claims circulating on social media.

The Assembly’s assurance comes amid heightened public attention on the safety of the Villagio development following the circulation of reports questioning its structural stability.

While the Assembly has maintained that the building is safe, the concerns highlight the importance of proper maintenance, safety monitoring and the timely communication of verified information to the public, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
