A tragic road accident on the Nkenkensu stretch of the Kumasi-Techiman Highway in the Ashanti Region has claimed the lives of 12 people, leaving two others in critical condition.
The fatal crash occurred on Tuesday afternoon after a commercial mini-bus travelling from Kumasi towards Techiman collided head-on with a trailer heading in the opposite direction.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the commercial vehicle attempted to overtake another vehicle but veered into the lane of the oncoming trailer, resulting in the devastating collision.
Medical staff at the Nkenkensu Government Hospital confirmed that 12 passengers were pronounced dead upon arrival, while two survivors are currently receiving treatment in critical condition.
An eyewitness, identified as Eric, disclosed that the accident happened around 1:40 p.m., but emergency response was delayed.
Meanwhile, the bodies of three Muslim women from Wenchi who died in the accident have been released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic traditions Tuesday evening.
The bodies of the remaining deceased persons have been deposited at the Nkenkensu Government Hospital morgue pending identification and preservation.
Police have since commenced investigations into the accident, while the wrecked vehicles have been cleared from the highway to ease traffic congestion.
The incident has once again raised concerns over reckless overtaking and increasing road accidents on major highways across the country.
