A tramadol intake competition between two young men at Babile in the Lawra Municipality of the Upper West Region has reportedly claimed the life of a 20-year-old man.
The deceased, identified only as Kukura, allegedly swallowed 13 tramadol tablets at once in an attempt to outdo a friend during a competition among peers.
According to eyewitness accounts, Kukura’s competitor was known among the group for being able to take five tramadol tablets at a go. In an effort to surpass that record, Kukura allegedly consumed 13 tablets simultaneously, after which he reportedly collapsed.
Kukura, a native of Tugo in the Jirapa Municipality who lived in Babile, was rushed to the Babile Polyclinic after he became weak shortly after taking the tablets.
He was later referred to the Upper West Regional Hospital in Wa and subsequently transferred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
However, he died despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life.
An eyewitness, who spoke to Onua News on condition of anonymity, said the abuse of tramadol among the youth in the area has become widespread and called for urgent intervention.
The incident has sparked concern among residents and stakeholders in Babile over the growing abuse of tramadol and other substances among young people in the Upper West Region and across the country.
Tramadol is an opioid medication prescribed for the treatment of moderate to severe pain.
Health experts warn that excessive intake can suppress breathing and damage the brain and other vital organs.
Its abuse has become increasingly common among some young people, who reportedly use the drug for excitement, physical endurance, and social status.
In recent years, the Upper West Region has witnessed rising concerns over the abuse of tramadol, codeine-based syrups, marijuana, shisha, alcohol, and other substances among the youth.
