Three people have been confirmed dead and about 15 others injured following violent clashes at New Winneba in the Central Region on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
The injured, including a police officer, have been transported to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital for medical attention.
Central Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ohene Boadi-Bossman, confirmed the casualties and said security personnel had been deployed to restore calm and prevent further escalation.
According to the police, the violence began at about 10:40 a.m. when a group of approximately 300 people, allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks, stormed New Winneba Township.
The group, reportedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, allegedly attacked residents and vandalised shops, stores and other properties in the community.
The sudden outbreak of violence created tension in the township as residents sought safety while security personnel moved in to contain the situation.
Personnel from the Winneba Divisional Police Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were subsequently deployed to the area to restore order and prevent the violence from spreading.
The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has also directed the deployment of additional personnel from the National Police Headquarters to reinforce the security operation.
The reinforcement includes two armoured vehicles to support the police on the ground and enhance their capacity to respond to any further threats.
The Ghana Police Service said the situation is currently under control, with security personnel maintaining a presence in the affected areas to prevent further disturbances and protect residents and property.
The circumstances that led to the clashes, including the motive behind the attack and the identities of those responsible for the deaths and injuries, are yet to be fully established.
Police investigations are expected to determine the cause of the violence and identify individuals who may have participated in the attacks and destruction of property.
Authorities are urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with the security agencies as efforts continue to maintain peace and stability in New Winneba.
