The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has assured Parliament that government is taking urgent steps to respond to the devastating floods that swept through parts of the country on June 29, 2026, leaving thousands displaced and several families counting their losses.
Presenting a statement on the floor of Parliament, the Interior Minister disclosed that the floods severely affected 25 communities across 18 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region.
According to him, the disaster displaced a total of 7,761 households, affecting about 38,802 individuals.
He further revealed that 12 people lost their lives while seven others remain missing following the heavy downpour and subsequent flooding.
Hon. Muntaka noted that although Greater Accra recorded the highest impact, parts of the Volta, Central and Western North regions were also affected by the floods.
The Minister said government agencies, emergency services, and security personnel have since intensified rescue and relief operations in affected communities to support victims and restore normalcy.
He announced that President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Finance, Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson, to immediately release GH¢350 million from the Contingency Fund to support emergency response and long-term mitigation measures.
Providing a breakdown of the allocation, Hon. Muntaka explained that GH¢200 million will be used to procure and distribute relief items to affected households, including food supplies, mattresses, blankets, medical items and other essentials needed by displaced persons.
The remaining GH¢150 million, he said, will be dedicated to flood mitigation interventions in the affected communities to help prevent future occurrences and improve drainage systems.
The Interior Minister further disclosed that personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces, including the 48 Engineer Regiment, have been deployed to assist with rescue operations, debris clearance, and rehabilitation works in flood-hit areas.
He assured Parliament that government remains committed to supporting affected residents and strengthening disaster preparedness measures across the country.
Hon. Muntaka also called on the public to cooperate with emergency response teams and adhere to safety directives from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other relevant agencies as efforts continue to manage the aftermath of the floods.
The June 29 floods caused extensive destruction to homes, businesses, roads and public infrastructure in several parts of Accra and surrounding communities after hours of heavy rainfall submerged major roads and residential areas.
