Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) vice-presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has expressed his deepest condolences to the people of Dagbon following the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, describing the late traditional ruler as a symbol of peace, reconciliation and unity.
In a heartfelt tribute issued after news of the Yaa Naa’s death, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, said the monarch’s reign would be remembered for his unwavering commitment to restoring harmony within the Dagbon Kingdom and strengthening relationships among its royal families.
According to him, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II demonstrated exemplary traditional leadership that helped heal long-standing divisions and fostered lasting peace among the people of Dagbon.
“My heartfelt condolences go to the people of Dagbon on the passing of His Majesty Ndan Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II,” he stated.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh noted that beyond his role as a traditional ruler, the late Yaa Naa was a personal source of inspiration whose guidance consistently centred on promoting peace, national unity and Ghana’s development.
He revealed that the Yaa Naa frequently engaged him on issues relating to the development of the Dagbon Kingdom and passionately followed up on discussions to ensure meaningful progress for the people.
“He was deeply committed to the welfare of the people of Dagbon and would often engage me on matters concerning the development of the Kingdom, following through with remarkable passion and urgency to ensure progress,” he said.
The former Education Minister praised the late monarch’s wisdom, selflessness and unwavering dedication to his people, saying those qualities would remain an enduring inspiration.
As Ghanaians mourn the passing of one of the country’s most respected traditional leaders, Dr. Opoku Prempeh expressed hope that the Yaa Naa’s legacy of peace, reconciliation and development would continue to guide future generations.
He concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of the late King’s soul and asked for strength and comfort for the people of Dagbon as they grieve their revered ruler.
The death of Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II marks the end of a significant era in Dagbon’s history, with many political leaders, traditional authorities and citizens paying tribute to his pivotal role in consolidating peace and unity in the kingdom after years of chieftaincy conflict.
