The strategic focus on education by the Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Hon. Dorcas Affo-Toffey, is yielding transformative results across the constituency.
Over the past six years, the MP who also serves as the Deputy Minister of Transport has spearheaded a massive drive in infrastructure, logistics, and human capital, setting a new benchmark for educational support in the Western Region.
The impact of these investments was recently showcased on the regional stage.
Peace International School from Half Assini emerged as the champion of the Western Regional Quiz Competition, held as part of the 69th Independence Day celebrations.
The school secured a commanding victory with 65 points, outperforming Tarkwa Goldfields School Complex (43 points) and Woodbridge Academy (32 points).
The competition, initiated by the Western Regional traditional leadership, featured 14 schools representing various districts, all vying to promote academic excellence at the basic school level.
While the Free SHS policy covers tuition, Hon. Affo-Toffey identified a gap in essential supplies that often hindered enrollment.
Since 2022, her flagship initiative has provided “start-up kits” for SHS students, including trunks, chop boxes, and mattresses.
In 2025 alone, over 600 brilliant but needy students received these essential items to begin their secondary education.
Additionally, the MP has personally financed the construction of several school buildings to reduce the classroom deficit.
According to Sylvester Yankey, Public Relations Officer for the Jomoro Municipal Assembly, the MP’s commitment is reflected in her budgetary priorities.
”She has done a lot for education; approximately 90% of her Common Fund is dedicated to this sector,” Yankey noted.
“From building schools to donating laptops to education offices, her support has been instrumental.”
This year, the MP also upgraded the rewards for top-performing students.
Moving beyond the traditional GH₵500 cash prize, she provided laptops for the best male and female WASSCE candidates and educational tablets for the top BECE performers to aid their transition to higher levels of learning.
Reflecting on the recent quiz victory, Hon. Affo-Toffey expressed pride in the students’ determination.
”I am deeply touched that my promise of a surprise package served as motivation for these young champions,” she stated.
“This victory is a testament to what our children can achieve when they are supported.
This is just the beginning together, we will continue to empower the future leaders of Jomoro.”
Mr. Yankey added that after seven years of placing second or third, the MP’s specific financial, moral, and spiritual intervention this year was the catalyst needed to finally bring the trophy home.
