The Kyeremasu community in the Dormaa East District has been plunged into a state of upheaval following the alleged killing of a young man suspected of involvement in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Since yesterday, disgruntled local youth have taken to the streets in a violent demonstration, demanding justice and an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
The protesters have mounted heavy roadblocks along the vital Berekum-Dormaa Ahenkro highway, a major artery connecting several surrounding communities.
The blockade has left commuters stranded and halted commercial activities, as the youth burned tires and chanted war songs to express their outrage.
The unrest was sparked by reports that the deceased was allegedly lynched or beaten to death by “thugs” or private security guards patrolling a local mining site.
Preliminary reports suggest the victim was apprehended at a galamsey site within the Kyeremasu enclave.
Instead of being handed over to the police, it is alleged that he was subjected to a brutal assault by the unidentified “thugs,” leading to his untimely death.
The Assembly Member for the area, Enoch Siaw, expressed deep concern over the escalating violence.
While acknowledging the gravity of the incident, he urged the community members to exercise restraint.
”The community is in deep pain,” Hon. Siaw stated. “We understand the frustration of the youth, but we must ensure that justice is sought through the right legal channels so we do not lose more lives in the process.”
Local police have been deployed to the area to restore order and clear the highway.
However, the atmosphere remains tense as the youth insist they will not back down until the individuals responsible for the “thug attacks” are brought to book.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the identity of the deceased has not been officially released, and authorities are yet to confirm if any arrests have been made in connection with the alleged killing.
