A somber atmosphere has gripped the community of Kwahu Tease following the tragic drowning of a 23-year-old man, identified only as Anthony, in the Afram River earlier today.
The incident, which occurred between the early morning and midday hours, has raised questions regarding the safety and support systems for individuals living with mental health challenges in the region.
According to Sampson Kpitsi Aban, the local Assembly Member, the tragedy follows a series of attempts to reunite the young man with his family.
Hon. Aban disclosed that Anthony, who was known to be facing “minor mental challenges,” had been wandering the area for approximately two days.
Recognizing the young man was in distress, Hon. Aban reached out to his counterpart, the Assembly Member for the Tease township. Together, the officials were successful in locating Anthony’s parents.
”We managed to find the parents and alerted them of his situation,” Hon. Aban stated.
“However, the parents did not arrive to pick him up as previously decided. This morning, the situation took this unfortunate turn.”
Authorities were alerted shortly after the drowning was discovered.
The local police have since processed the scene and conducted a preliminary investigation into the circumstances of the death.
The parents have been notified, and arrangements are being made for the recovery of the body and subsequent funeral proceedings.
