The Ghana Police Service in the Upper East Region has taken custody of a 27-year-old man, Abdul Basit, for allegedly possessing an assault rifle without lawful authority in Bawku.
The suspect was initially apprehended on April 13, 2026, by a military patrol team during a security operation at Sakabo, a suburb of the municipality.
According to officials, the patrol team responded to reports of gunfire in the area and moved swiftly to investigate.
Upon arrival, the officers reportedly spotted the suspect fleeing into a nearby room.
He was chased, arrested, and subsequently searched.
The operation led to the discovery of an AK-47 assault rifle along with 31 rounds of ammunition concealed in the room.
Preliminary interrogation indicates that Abdul Basit admitted to owning the weapon, raising further concerns about the circulation of illegal arms in the area.
He has since been handed over to the police and remains in custody, assisting with ongoing investigations.
Authorities say he will be arraigned before court in the coming days.
The arrest comes amid heightened security efforts in Bawku and its surrounding communities, where law enforcement agencies continue to clamp down on illegal weapons and criminal activity.
