The Ministry of Health has confirmed the payment of two months’ salary arrears to newly recruited nurses, signaling progress in addressing concerns over delayed remuneration within the health sector.
In a press release issued on April 28, 2026, the Ministry stated that the payments form part of its commitment to supporting health workers and improving conditions of service. It further assured affected personnel that subsequent payments covering an additional three months—from May to July 2026 will be made as previously scheduled.
The Ministry expressed appreciation to nurses and other stakeholders for their patience and cooperation during the period, reiterating its commitment to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare workforce to enhance service delivery nationwide.
Addressing concerns from some personnel, the Ministry advised individuals facing challenges or seeking clarification to contact the Human Resource for Health Development Directorate for assistance.
Beyond the arrears payment, the Ministry also outlined plans for a significant recruitment exercise aimed at expanding the health workforce.
According to the statement, the government intends to recruit up to 16,000 health workers this year. So far, financial clearance has been secured for approximately 8,000 positions, with efforts ongoing to obtain approval for the remaining slots.
The Ministry emphasized that no recruitment would take place without the necessary financial backing, noting that the approved clearances have been distributed across various health cadres to ensure a phased and structured absorption of personnel.
It also reiterated that the official recruitment portal remains the only authorized platform for applications, stressing that the measure is designed to ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability in the process.
While acknowledging that many applicants have successfully accessed the portal, the Ministry admitted that others have encountered difficulties due to the high volume of traffic.
It described the resulting anxiety among applicants as understandable and assured the public that steps are being taken to resolve the challenges and secure additional clearances to accommodate more qualified candidates.
