Two people have been confirmed dead and five others injured following a fatal road crash at Third Ridge Junction on the Accra–Cape Coast Highway in the Central Region.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at about 7:00 a.m., prompting a swift response from personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) at the Cape Coast Regional Headquarters.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find a mangled Toyota Corolla with registration number GW-5769-16 and a HOWO tipper truck with registration number GN-1497-22 involved in a head-on collision.
Firefighters worked to rescue victims trapped in the wreckage.
The driver of the Toyota Corolla, who was pinned behind the steering wheel, was extricated and rushed to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Another victim also succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.
Speaking to media, the Central Regional Commander of the GNFS, ACFO Merinder Mary Attigah-Mensah, explained that the Corolla was traveling from Cape Coast towards Accra when the driver encountered a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre by a pick-up vehicle.
According to her, the pick-up vehicle abruptly cut into the lane of an oncoming tipper truck, forcing both drivers to react.
The Corolla driver slowed down to avoid a collision, while the tipper truck, approaching from the opposite direction, veered into the outer lane to make way for the pick-up.
However, in an attempt to return to its lane, the driver of the tipper truck lost control and crashed head-on into the Corolla.
ACFO Attigah-Mensah described the incident as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and urged motorists to exercise caution on highways.
She also called on relevant stakeholders to intensify driver education and organise regular training on road safety regulations to help prevent similar tragedies.
