The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the approved academic calendar for basic schools across the country for the 2026/2027 academic year, outlining key dates for reopening, vacations, and examinations.
According to a press release issued by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, the academic year will be structured into three terms, covering Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools nationwide.
The first term, which will run for 15 weeks, is scheduled to begin on September 8, 2026, and end on December 17, 2026.
A mid-term break will be observed on November 5 and 6, 2026.
Students will then proceed on vacation from December 18, 2026, to January 4, 2027, with schools reopening for the second term on January 5, 2027.
The second term will span 12 weeks, starting on January 5, 2027, and ending on March 25, 2027.
This will be followed by a vacation period from March 26 to April 19, 2027, after which the third term will commence on April 20, 2027.
The third term, lasting 14 weeks, will conclude on July 22, 2027, with the academic year officially ending on July 23, 2027.
GES also announced that the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for final-year Junior High School students is slated to take place from May 5 to May 12, 2027.
The Service emphasized that all public holidays within the academic year will be duly observed.
Additionally, each term will include a two-day mid-term break to provide rest for both learners and teachers.
GES is urging all heads of schools, teachers, parents, and guardians to take note of the calendar and make adequate preparations to ensure a smooth and effective academic year.
The Service reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a well-structured academic schedule to support quality teaching and learning outcomes across the country.
